Perhaps Alfred Hitchcock’s most psychologically dense work.<\/em>
\n Scottie Ferguson, a detective, is unable to follow a criminal over the rooftops due to his fear of heights. He is also unable to stop a fellow police officer from falling to his dea- th. During Scottie’s convalescence from this trauma an old friend asks him to follow his wife, Madeleine, who appears to be somehow “possessed” by an ancestor, Carlotta Valdez. He follows her, speaks to her, falls in love with her but is unable to prevent her from committing suicide – like Carlotta – by jumping from the bell-tower of a (Spa- nish) Church. Another period of convalescence follows, during which Scottie more or less regains his lost mind. Then, he sees a woman who looks just like Madeleine. What follows is the story of how everything we have seen so far has been an illusion, and how Scottie imitates and reproduces this illusion in an attempt to “recreate” his lost love. Like Madeleine before, now Scottie is possessed, this time without supernatu- ral hocus-pocus. A story that has its roots in Greek mythology (Pygmalion and Gala- tea) but is right up to date (when it was made and today) in terms of the relationship\u00a0between image and reality, desire and the impossible search for its fulfilment.<\/em>
